About Jessica,
author of HealthyFeathers

I acquired my first cockatiel, Chirp, back in 2004 when he was just 3 months old. He further fueled my interest in birds. He continuously amazed me and my family with his huge demanding personality. I became very avid about reading up on how to best care for cockatiels, and quite quickly, what reading material I could get my hands on was not enough – I wanted to learn more!

In 2005, I acquired my first job at For the Birds, an avian-only veterinary practice in San Jose, CA. I learned so much about best bird care practices while growing into an avian veterinary technician position. Bird-patient by bird-patient, I got to see and learn firsthand the reasoning behind the advice given by avian veterinarians and forever will feel fortunate for this knowledge. Alongside working at For the Birds, I studied Cellular and Molecular Biology and earned my Bachelor’s of Science from Humboldt State University, CA in 2014. Since earning my degree, I have been working as a research scientist in life science biology research, conducting scientific studies within psoriasis and studying human inner ear biology. While conducting research, I continue to find myself passionate about helping teach others the best care practices that I have learned over the years through working at the avian veterinary clinic and through studying biology, so that their birds can live the healthiest and longest life possible.

I hope to share what I know with you, not just what ‘to do’ and ‘not to do,’ but back up the advice given with reasons why.

I started HealthyFeathers in 2021, and my dream is that it will grow to be a fully comprehensive resource.

Hope you enjoy!
